Day of Action for Women’s Health – June 1, 2011

by Claire, Communications Intern

On June 1st supporters of NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina, Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina, Planned Parenthood Health Systems, NC NOW and other North Carolina pro-choice organizations gathered in Raleigh and online to spread the message that women in North Carolina needed to be protected and included in the state budget.

The day kicked off with a Phone Bank to urge constituents of Representatives Barnhart, Floyd and McGrady and to Governor Perdue to not support HB 854 or the current state budget.

Despite the sweltering heat, many supporters turned out the visibility rally/press conference at Halifax Mall in front of the General Assembly to support the many issues affecting women and the state budget.  Speakers from numerous organizations discussed the proposed budget cuts’ impact on, not only reproductive freedom and family planning, but on the rights of women to work, on the rights of teachers and the education of our children, and other healthcare issues.  The proposed budget cuts to Medicaid would disproportionately affect elderly and disabled women in our state, who make up the majority of the people who receive Medicaid.  Teachers, the bulk of whom are women, will lose 18,000 job opportunities in K-12 positions.  Critical and successful preschool programs such as Smart Start and More at Four would be defunded.  Both women working in the mental health field and women suffering from mental health issues would be disadvantaged by budget cuts to the Division of Mental Health Services and other similar services.

The day of action continued with more phone banking to constituents of those representatives and the Governor.  Over 200 calls were made thanks to our efforts and will hopefully effect the actions of the Governor and legislators.

Though the day is over, you can still contact your representative to make sure they vote against the proposed budget.  You can find their information here. Governor Perdue’s Constituents Service Office can be reached by Phone at (800) 662-7952 or (919) 733-2391, or Fax at (919) 733-2120, or email at

Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the Phone Bank, showed support at the rally, and called or emailed Governor Perdue or their representatives.
